We thought we'd start with easy photo challenges, so we are starting with the alphabet, so if i am late uploading the prompts you can move along without waiting for me each day.

So today's challenge is:

I used the little metal tags on my LO, sorry for the bad photo, need to work on my technique!

May 2010 Monthly Challenges

Here are the challenges for May 2010 ...

1. Complete a LO about your Mother, Grandmother, Sister or Best friend. It is Mothers Day this month and it's there is no better time to scrap a page about the good times with those special to us. Include something floral - paper, ribbon, flowers, die cuts, etc.

2. Complete a LO with a neutral background (kraft, cream, white, grey or black) and use bright colours to make your page pop. Add anything you like as long as it's bright.

3. Complete a LO using a conversation with a family member or friend as the journalling. Try to include photo's that tell the story, but if that's not possible general photo's of the person in the conversation will work just as well.

4. Complete a LO using a title such as 'W is for wonderful', 'B is for Brave', etc. and use a large letter (die cut, sticker etc) for the main letter. Include some hand written journalling and at least two photo's.

5. Complete a LO to reflect on the life you are living now. What's a typical day for you? Are you busy? Do you have lots of time on your hands? What are you doing that you would rather not be? Why do you do what you do? etc.

6. Complete a LO with an Edge. Add some patterned paper with a pinked or scalloped edge.

7. Complete a LO using the title 'Escape' and use colours inspired by nature, e.g. sand and water, grass and trees, red earth and sky etc. and include some texture (hessian, mesh, fabric, leaves, cardboard etc)

8. Complete a LO keeping the focus on one photo. Convert the photo to b&w and layer your journalling and embellishments near the photo to draw attention to it.

9. Complete a LO about your teenage years. Were you wild & wacky, or quiet and reserved? Who were your best friends? Where were your favourite hangouts? How did you spend your time? What music did you listen to? etc.

How about using your favourite colours to scrap a LO about what you are hoping for or plan to do on Mothers Day. You never know, if you get it done in time it might give those that matter some ideas :)

Here are the rules in case you have forgotten

What we do is at the start of the month we give a list of 9 challenges that will incorporate a variety of products, themes, techniques etc. You then check them out and select at least 5 of the 9 challenges that you want to try to do in that month - you can elect to do them all. Then as well as these 5 Layouts you also need to complete a layout using each of the three AUSSLE packs for that month and also either a Monthly Snapshot or Member's Challenge.

So you will be doing 9 layouts to complete the monthly challenges consisting of three aussles, 5 monthly challenges and either a monthly snapshot or the members challenge. Please note you can combine your monthly challenges with daily challenges but you can’t for example combine an aussle with a monthly challenge

Now there is a little bit of an incentive to complete the challenges for the month - if all challenges you decide to try are completed within the month you will receive a credit of $10 to spend at The Scrap Heap during the next month.

If you are taking part in the monthly challenges for us to keep track of them, you must share them here on Aussielayouts as an attachment (not just a link to the gallery) and you must include in the subject line of the email the words Challenge Layout and the number that you are completing or the words Members Challenge or Monthly Snapshot. Without these trigger words or having the layout attached it may be missed and not counted towards your challenges. There will also be a section started in the Gallery called Monthly Challenges – May, where you can upload your layouts for this month if you would like.

So who is going to be brave and put your hand up for the challenges this month? All you have to do is send an email to aussielayouts letting us all know which ones you would like to attempt and whether you are going to do the Member's Challenge or the Monthly Snapshot and we will list them in the Database at the Yahoo Group Home page thanks to the lovely Mandy.

Brisbane Paper Crafts Festival

The Brisbane Paper Crafts Festival is on again folks and we will be there at Stand 16 with lots of goodies for you all to look at. The Show is celebrating it's 10th Year of operation and should be lots of fun for everyone!!

We have a special on this show with heaps of Patterned Papers reduced to the low price of any 3 sheets for only $2.

You will find the Paper Crafts Show at the RNA Exhibition Grounds, in the Upper Commerce Building from Friday the 5th to Sunday the 7th of February. Doors open at 10am and we are working hard each day until 4.30pm.

The show is on a little bit earlier than usual this year so get caught and miss out.

Clean Up 1 ... Sharing my Messy Desk

Here is the before shot of my Messy Scrapping Desk ... sadly at the moment isn't looking much better but I am working on it!!

I seem to have just shuffled and moved things around but the table section is clearer and all the stuff sitting piled up the top at the back is gone now and I am going to lift up the middle shelf so it is on top of the paper shelves and I can then hang things from the holes in the metal reinforcing strip along the shelf edge.

How is everyone else going with their tidy up??

Your First Mission ... is you choose to accept it is ... Clean that Table!!

But the first thing you all need to do is take a photo of your scrap room / area / desk and share it here as well as upload it to this new section of the gallery just for your clean-up photos ...

Clean Up Photos

This is mainly so that when you have finished you can go back and say ... holy crap, how did I ever work / find anything etc etc ... in that shambles ROFL!! How can you create beautiful work when you are working in mess??

OK Then we all need to clean off that desk/table/workspace. I mean clean off everything ... everything ... all off the table and now actually clean the table. Wipe it down and if you are like me get that dirty Self Healing Mat out and scrub it clean ... get all the dried paint and glue and glitter and other crap off it and put it back on the table when it is nice and clean and dry.

Now doesn't that look good?? All clean and isnt that table about 5 times bigger than when you started?? Ah hah but the hard part is all the stuff that you took off the table now isn't it??

OK obviously you need to sort through all the this stuff and then you would be able to put most of it away as you go!! Put away all the tools and adhesives and paints and things where you normally store them .. in a drawer / tote / box / on the shelf etc

Put away anything else off the table that has a definite place to go ... you know what I mean ... cardstock back in your storage files, papers in the paper holders etc Sort them into your preferred style as you go though ... no short cuts.

Just put away as much of as much of the clutter as you can now.

Then you really need to get all those little scraps of paper and cardstock that are too small for anything but we all keep anyway and throw them in the bin. Seriously ... will you ever use them?? Now empty your bin and put a new bag in the bin so even that is clean and tidy!!

Now of course you will be left with other bits and pieces that don't have a spot to go yet but we will get to all this in good time.

For now the rest of mine is going in a big box for the rest of the Organise Your Stuff Missions ... I know this seems that the job is only half done but you will feel great once that table is clean and you have room to create again!!

Then when you are all done .. take another photo and upload that ... don't you feel good!!

Oh yeah ... You have until next Saturday to complete this mission when I will post the next step to tidiness for your scrapping area!!

Step-By-Step Layout Project

Did you all see Bev's great Step-by-Step Layout in this weekend's Newsletter?? Here is a copy of the information for you all to try your hand at creating this layout!!

Scrap Within Reach Afternoon Tea Collection - Teaberry Blend, Spiced Plum and Green Peony

Kaisercraft Self-Adhesive Rhinestones

Matching Ribbon approx 2.5cm x 32cm

Assortment of matching Green Tara Flower Petals

Trimmings Coloured Buttons

A2Z Scraplets Chipboard Script Word

Swirl/Flourish Rub-on or Stamp

Step-By Step Instructions:

Use the Teaberry Blend as your background paper.

From the spiced plum cut a piece 15cm x 23cm and stick it to your background in the vertical position 4.5cm from the bottom and 6.5cm from the right hand edge.

From the Green Peony cut a piece 26cm x 8.5cm and stick it in the horizontal position 8.5cm from the bottom and 3cm from the right hand edge.

Attach your 4x6 photo 12.5cm from the bottom and 6cm from the left hand edge.

Choose a pretty 2.5cm wide ribbon and cut a 32cm length and stick it across the page just below your photo.

Use a compass to lightly draw a circle with a 21cm diameter approx 2.5cm from left hand edge and 4cm from bottom of page.

Use Kaisercraft Rhinestones to embellish around your circle with a 1 cm spacing between each rhinestone. Rub out pencil line.

Choose an A2Z Scraplets Chipboard Script Word and colour it to suit your layout.

I pinched an idea from the lovely Ginny Fleet to colour the title by inking it in a pale colour at the top, a darker colour just below that and a darker colour at the bottom for a lovely graded colour effect ... you can use dimensional magic over the top if you want a glossy finish.

To finish off the layout apply some assorted Green Tara Flower Petals to the right side of the photo in a random stagger and add a rub-on spray or swirl behind the flowers if you wish.

Poor Neglected Blog and Pre-Orders Section

Hi everyone ... hope you are all well and getting lots of scrapping done!!

Sorry about the horrible neglect of our poor old blog lately. I can only blame myself (and a family trip away, a case of the flu or two and putting on a SWIG Scrapping Weekend in there too) but I am back now and hopefully on track again!!

OK So I am here to let you all know that we have had some new goodies arrive this week and more arriving in the next couple of weeks too!!

Firstly we have started a Pre-Order section on our site where you can see what goodies are coming in over the next few weeks and can order them to be shipped out as soon as they arrive.

There are few categories already in there ready to have a look at now.

The Basic Grey Eskimo Kisses and Indian Summer Collections as well as the new Bling It On Rub-ons are all due to arrive on Monday (14th Sept) morning and any pre-orders in will be shipped out that day.

We also have 4 new Collection from Bo Bunny available for Pre-order and I have been told that they are due to be shipped out to us on the 18th September so we should have it here pretty soon after that!!

We have had a lot of restocks arrive in the last fortnight since our SWIG Scrapping Weekend, so keep an eye on the What's New section of the site as I will update it with the things that have arrived back in this weekend.

Don't forget that the Australasian Scrapbook and Papercraft Expo is on this Long Weekend at the Southbank Convention Centre.

The Scrap Heap will be there again with our popular bargain stand with everything priced at between $1 and $4 so make sure you come by and say hello !!

The Expo is open over the whole Long Weekend - Saturday to Monday from 9am to 5pm each day.

The event organisers have some great classes/workshops available to book into over the weekend and you can find out more about this at the Expo's site by clicking here.

Heaps of Papers moved into Clearance Section

I am picking up more papers today and need to make space on the shelves for them so have moved a heap of paper over to our Clearance Papers Section of the Site.

There are papers ranging in price from just 50c a sheet through to $1 with all of them reduced to at least (but usually more than) half of their original price.

Brisbane Paper Craft Festival

The Brisbane Paper Crafts Festival is on again this weekend (March 13-15th) at the RNA Showgrounds and The Scrap Heap will be there again with our famous bargain stand where nothing is over $4. Our stand number is 34 and we are in our usual spot down the back corner of the show !!

The opening times for the show are 10am - 4.30pm on Friday and Saturday and 10am - 4pm on Sunday. The admission fees are Adult $10, Concession $8, Children free !!

Now the Paper Crafts Show this year will be a bit different as it is now under new management and the new guys are really excited about the show and have thrown heaps of new ideas and fun stuff into the show.

If you want to have a look at their website you can see who will be exhibiting, and book in for some of the workshops/classes that they are running and see what else will be on over the weekend.

New File Set from Kaisercraft

Have you all seen the new File Set from Kaisercraft that arrived in store recently??

How cool is this?? It has 3 metal files in different sizes and one emery board style file in the set and at only $5.95 it is a great buy!!

The little metal rasps are great for tidying up all those little bits of patterned paper out of all the nooks and crannies when you cover your chipboard lettering and shapes.

Another SWIG Scrapping Weekend Nearly Here Again

Just a quick bit about our upcoming SWIG Scrapping weekend away.

The Scrap Heap's 19th Scrapbooking Weekend Inspiration Getaway (SWIG for short) is being held over the weekend of the November 28th - 30th at The Frederick Marsden Youth Centre in Kallangur in SE Queensland and we would love it if you could join us.

We have had a couple of spots come up this week so if you were thinking of trying a scrapping weekend why not give us a call and come along to a SWIG Weekend.

It's on again folks ... The Sydney Paper Crafts Festival that is and The Scrap Heap will be there again with our stand absolutely overflowing with $1 and $2 Bargains for everyone!!

We have heaps more stock this year from a huge variety of suppliers including Making Memories, Basic Grey, Three Bugs, Bella, Bazzill, KI Memories and Kaisercraft to name a few. Also our regular range of Ribbons, Brads, Rhinestones will be there and of course heaps of those Flowers that you all love!!

Don't forget that the Festival is at a New Venue this year at Canterbury Racecourse. It is close to the centre of Sydney and there is ample free parking. Good public transport is available, both by bus and rail. Visitors using Canterbury Station will have a courtesy bus service. The venue also has an excellent catering outlet that has a wide variety of food and refreshments.

We hope all the Sydney-siders come down and see us next weekend at the Sydney Paper Crafts Festival ... on all weekend including Friday October 31st (Halloween), Saturday November 1st and Sunday November 2nd from 9.30am till 4pm.

We are going to run a Melbourne Cup Sweep here and wondered who would like to play.

I will organise some prizes for 4 placings in the race ... 1st, 2nd 3rd and of course Last LOL Not sure what they will be yet but any surprise pack of scrapping stuff is good isn't it ?? LOL

But of course ... there is an entry fee (of sorts) involved in the sweep. We need a layout uploaded to the gallery that fulfils a few criteria ...

1st ... Use the Sketch below (one of October's Page Maps)
2nd ... Use Blue and White somewhere on the layout (last years winners' colours - I think :-))
3rd ... Use a number somewhere in your title

There are usually 24 runners (according to knowledgeable sources LOL) so get scrapping as the first 24 layouts in, get the horses!!

We are very excited to announce our New Team Members that have joined us this week.

We have Audrey Chambers, Cassie Cusack, Julie Myers, Kathryn Marks, Nicole Saler, Tina Dean and Sue Wheeler who will be creating layouts and projects in future Inspiration Team Newsletters.

You know Christmas is well on it's way again this year when you notice the shops making space for the displays of decorations in the shops ... less than 100 days to go !!

If you are anything like me you have heaps of Christmas photos still to scrap from years gone past. Why not make a start on them this year, catch up and be ready for the new shots from Christmas 2008!!

A Sweet Gift Idea

Now who wouldn't love a box full of lolly pops and flowers ... especially when the flowers can be reused in your scrapping once you have finished with all the Sugar!!

For the base Bev has used a gift box from a cheapie shop but a milk can or one of the lunch tins from The Scrap Heap with the lid open would look really cool.

She stuffed the bottom with tissue paper and then cut a block of florist foam to fit inside the box. They sell this at most junk shops or you could ask a florist if they will sell you some.

You then take some mini chuppa chups/lolly pops (these are sold in packets at woolies etc, they are smaller than the usual chuppa chups) and thread the stick through the middle of the mulberry flower and arrange them in the container.

To finish it off Bev added some larger all day suckers along the back. Wrap in cellophane and add a bow and you are done!

Bev says that she has also made some other similar gift ideas with different themes including other items such as little garden ornaments like a frog or a fairy.

Design Team Member Search

We currently have a couple of vacancies for Inspiration Team Members here at The Scrap Heap.

New Inspiration Team Members will be chosen by Christine and Beryl, the owners of The Scrap Heap with input from existing Inspiration Team Members.

You may apply for a position on The Scrap Heap's Inspiration Team by submitting the following information to Christine at her email ... christinem@hotkey.net.au by September 30th 2008.

- Create a project (layout or OTP) with a basic set of step by step instructions including a materials list of items used.

- Forward through two or three other recent layouts or OTP that you have done as well or link to an Online Gallery for us to see your current work.

- List any current Design Team memberships and Scrapbook Forums/communities/message boards in which you are active.

- Write up a bit of an autobiography or sorts including basic personal and scrapbooking profile with your preferred email address, and any other information you think we might need. Also include a couple of paragraphs on why you feel you would be a great Team member.

Successful Team Members will be contacted soon after September 30th and will be announced in the Inspiration Team Newsletter on October 18th, 2008.

A Gift for Uploading to our Gallery

Hello everyone,

As you all know we have a Gallery attached to our website where we welcome you to upload your layouts and other paper craft creations.

I love to look at all the layouts in the Gallery and am frequently inspired by the creations that are uploaded there as are lots of other people, I am sure.

Now another big part of the Gallery, for me, is the smile I get when I receive comments, questions or feedback about my scrapping in the Gallery. It is lovely to think that my online friends are looking at and appreciating my photos or the work that has gone into the creations.

One of our most prolific commenters at our Gallery would have to the lovely Bev Watt who comments on every single layout that is uploaded to the Gallery one by one. She always has the nicest, supportive, most positive things to say and anyone who knows Bev, knows that it comes straight from the heart.

Well to promote a bit of scrapping amongst our Online friends and to get you all uploading your layouts to The Scrap Heap Gallery, Bev has donated a Gift Voucher for $20 that will go to the person who receives her 20,000th comment in the Gallery.

We at The Scrap Heap have also decided to match this with two more Gift Vouchers for $10 each ... one for the person before who uploads just before and the one who uploads just after the person with number 20,000. Cos you know it's horrible when you miss winning by just one isn't it ??

As I said Bev comments, in order, on every layout that goes into the Gallery, one after another and she has about 100 comments to go to reach the 20,000th.

Brisbane Scrapbook Expo Craft Show

Hello everyone.

Just letting you all know that we are off to the Brisbane Scrapbook Expo over the Queens Bday long weekend and if any of the local girls were coming to the show we would love it if you came by to our stand and said Hello!!

Well I packed the car up last night and we are ready to go set up our stand for the show today. The car is wel land truly chock-a-block with boxes almost filled up to the roof of the and poor Mum has a big box of stuff that she will have to nurse all the way down (but she doesn't know that yet though LOL) .

We have lots of new stuff for our $1/$2 stand this year so make sure if you are coming to the show you pop by and say Hi to us and check out all the bargains!!

There are lots of classes on over the weekend that you can book into and some of them look great ... if you haven't seen the workshops that are being offered you can check them out at their website here ... Scrapbook Expo Workshops

Easter Challenges 5, 6, 7 and 8

Ooops sorry no more challenges came through yesterday ... someone got distracted by visits to family and never got back to the computer.

Here are a couple for to keep you scrapping all day:

No 5 - We have a sketch again since you all like them so much (Becky Fleck one this time)

No 6 - Lots of people go camping or have a short break at Easter, so how about doing a LO to celebrate the great outdoors (another VC Idea from Debbie Y)

No 7 - Do a layout using some Basic Grey Paper and do some Tearing and Inking and use something old from your stash as well (the older the better)

No 8 - Make an Off the Page Item that you have had as a project to do for ages and never got round to ... today is the day to do it !!

*phew* is that enough to keep you all busy ??

Easter VC Challenge No 4

Here is Challenge No 4 for the Easter VC Weekend ... this one comes from Debbie Y ...

Because it's Easter and the bunny is due to make a delivery real soon, how about using chocolate (the colour) on a Layout .... paint, embellishments, paper, whatever you like as long as it's the colour of chocolate.

Yummy Yum Yum ... had my first chocolate this morning for Easter at Brekkie at Mum's. It was good !!

I must start the chant now "Chocolate is Bad and tastes like crap. Chocolate is Bad and tastes like crap" !! Do you think I will believe it if I say it enough times??

Make an Easter Card with at least 3 Flowers and an Egg shape on it :-)

So now you will all have a nice card to give to someone on Sunday!!

Well it's Easter and the traditional colours can't be ignored so of course there is no way we can let Easter VC challenges go by without having one of these ...

Do a layout using Pastel Easter-y type Colours and include some Brads and Ribbons on the page

OK Now I can't think too hard this early in the morning so I think I have done well just setting all this up LOL ... so to make it easier for me I will just go with a sketch for the first VC Challenge.

One of the Sketches that NicoleB shared earlier in the week (thanks Nicole) so I have no idea where it came from but thank you to the creator - I loved it :-)
